Pool Types: which one is right for you?

February 9, 2026

With so many pools which one is right for you?
Not every pool is the right fit for every yard or every person.

Not all pools are created equal and not all of them are meant for your LYFE style.

Some are entry-level options, while others are designed to be extravagant showstopping, bespoke, showpieces.
One of the most common things we hear during consultations is, “I don’t even know where to start or what the differences are.” And honestly? That’s fair. There’s a lot of noise out there, and most people aren’t sure what actually fits their space, their budget, or their LYFE. Whether you’re building your forever home or just want something fun for the kids next summer, here’s how to figure out which pool type actually fits the way you live.

Above-Ground Pools
*Fast. Flexible. Not forever.*

Best for: Budget-conscious families, renters, or anyone who wants something simple and
seasonal.

Pros:

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Quick install (sometimes in a day)
  • Easy to remove if needed

Cons:

  • Limited design and depth
  • Often not HOA-compliant
  • Not a long-term solution

We don’t build these at LYFE but it’s an option for some and depending on your life it might be the perfect option.

Container Pools
*The cool-kid choice with modern vibes.*

Best for: Small yards, modern homes, or anyone who wants something different.

Pros:

  • Sleek, modern look
  • Fast install
  • Great for narrow spaces

Cons:

  • Limited customization
  • May require creative zoning or HOA approval
  • Can feel industrial without thoughtful design

Think super modern and industrial. Limited options but a conversation piece for sure!

Vinyl Liner Pools
*Budget-friendly entry to inground ownership.*

Best for: Families who want a traditional inground pool without the concrete price tag.

Pros:

  • Lower investment than concrete
  • Faster install
  • Smooth surface (gentle on feet and skin)
Cons:

  • Liner needs replacing over time
  • Can be damaged by sharp toys or dog claws
  • Fewer shape and feature options

The most cost friendly of the traditional pool build options.

Fiberglass Pools
*Sleek, durable, and low-maintenance.*
Best for: Homeowners who want a quick install and long-term reliability—without
sacrificing style.

Pros:

  • Fast installation (as little as 1–2 weeks after excavation)
  • Smooth, non-porous surface (easy to clean and gentle on feet)
  • Lower long-term maintenance costs

Cons:

  • Limited to pre-designed shapes and sizes
  • Must be delivered in one piece—so yard access matters
  • Customization is limited compared to concrete

We love these at LYFE pools and carry a few great lines for any backyard space. Lacking some of the flexibility of liner or concrete pools but making up for it with durability and convenience while maintaining a high level of quality. Manufacturers are key here. Not all Fiberglass pool builders are equal… by a long shot!

Concrete Pools
*Fully custom, made to last.*

Best for: Homeowners looking for total creative control and long-term value.

Pros:

  • Unlimited design possibilities
  • Long lifespan
  • High-end finishes and features
Cons:

  • Higher cost
  • Longer build timeline
  • Requires consistent water chemistry care

The ultimate in flexibility, show stopping potential. Hands down the most options and ability to build ‘Anything’.

Biodesign Pools
*For the natural, modern backyard experience.*

Best for: Nature-lovers, modernists, or anyone who wants a pool that doesn’t look like a
pool.

Pros:

  • Organic, resort-style look
  • Beach entries and curved forms
  • Integrates beautifully into natural landscaping

Cons:

  • Higher initial investment
  • May be unfamiliar to inspectors or HOAs
  • Not ideal for those who prefer traditional pool layouts

A newer option with a very organic feel.

Still Not Sure? That’s Normal.
Here’s the thing: most people don’t know exactly what they want until they see what’s out
there.

That’s where we come in. At LYFE Pools, we focus on what we do best: fiberglass and concrete pools. These are the options we stand behind because they offer the best balance of beauty, durability, and long-term value.

We’ll help you cut through the noise, understand the trade-offs, and figure out whether
you’re more suited for a low-maintenance fiberglass pool or a fully custom concrete build.
No fluff, no pushy sales, just real advice from a team that knows pools and knows North Carolina.

Some clients want turnkey simplicity. Others want architectural showpieces. Either way,
we’ll help you design a pool that feels as good as it looks and one that actually fits your
LYFE.
